Join us statewide on November 21st as we fight against the GEO Group’s proposed five-year contract with ICE at Winton Detention Center; an alarming expansion of a private detention industry that profits from confinement, surveillance, and the separation of families. Expected to open in early December, the facility could become one of the largest ICE detention centers on the East Coast.
WHAT IS GEO GROUP AND
WHY IN WINTON, NC?
GEO Group is one of the nation’s largest private prison and detention companies. Its business model depends on government contracts to incarcerate and detain people, creating inhumane conditions, including the lack of medical care, staffing, oversight, and the mistreatment of people in its facilities.
Winton is a majority-Black town facing economic challenges, and many residents see the facility as one of the few available sources of jobs. We stand with Winton and its residents; but reject the idea that detention, family separation, and the expansion of ICE should be presented as the answer to economic hardship.
We demand the shutdown of this detention facility, to invest in education, housing, & wages, not on detention and deportations. The opening up of this detention center will expand the fear that is running rampant in our immigrant communities, we must mobilize in mass numbers to show that the people stand with immigrant families!
