Nuestro Open House
📷 Calling all Durham Public School Teachers, Families, and Staff: Join us for our Nuestro Open House🏫
Under the current system, public education is constantly under attack. The Second Trump Administration has already fired half the staff (1300 workers) from the department of education, is funneling billions of our taxpayer dollars in private school vouchers, and has withheld more than $4 billion for public education at the start of the 2025-26 school year. This dramatically our state, where North Carolina ranks dead last in public school funding in the entire nation.
We are hosting this back to school drive not just to make sure our students and teachers have the things they need, but to discuss how we can fight for a system where our kids have a dignified education and our educators have a dignified job with livable wages.
So join us for Nuestro Open House for good food, school supplies, and our vision for a just education system.

Fidel Castro: 100 Year Centennial of the Cuban Revolutionary
This August marks the centennial of Cuban Revolutionary leader Fidel Castro. 🇨🇺
For six decades, Fidel Castro and the Cuban Revolution have been demonized by the U.S. media and political establishment. However, for the rest of the world, the Cuban Revolution has been a beacon of hope in the fight against imperialism.
Fidel Castro, the undisputed leader of the Cuban socialist project, has been a teacher for those fighting for a better world free of capitalist exploitation.
Come together with us as we study and discuss the Cuban leader’s life and impact, from the opening actions of the Cuban Revolution to the decades of state-building that Castro oversaw in the years after. Learn about this controversial figure in world history and how we can stand in solidarity with the Cuban people facing over 60 years of a U.S. blockade and sanctions by raising funds for humanitarian aid!
Malcolm X Film Screening
Come kick off Black August with a Spike Lee Joint 🎞️🍕
Black August is a month-long commemoration of the Black liberation struggle that honors political prisoners and all those who have sacrificed for Black freedom.
This Thursday, we are hosting a screening of Malcolm X, featuring Denzel Washington as one of the most dynamic leaders of the Black Revolution. The film traces all of Malcolm’s life from his family being terrorized by the Klan as a child all the way to his political organizing in the Nation of Islam and transformative pilgrimage to Mecca. The life of Malcolm X truly embodies the core principles of Black August study, fast, train, fight.
So join us this Thursday at Nuestro Barrio for a screening of Spike Lee’s Malcolm X to continue to remember those who gave everything for liberation and to recommit ourselves to that struggle today!
